Someone asked John Mueller from Google if he added images to his web pages and if this would help him rank higher in Google searches.
John said no, he said on Twitter that “adding an image will not automatically produce an effect in rankings”
Of course, if there are related images, people will find the page more attractive and enthusiastic.
These people can share and eventually link to the page.
Therefore, you can indirectly increase the ranking by adding images.
But Google does not have a ranking algorithm, it can be said that if there are images on the page, they can be ranked better in web searches.
Of course, the image might also rank in image search and drive some traffic for you.
There is no automatic effect from adding images.

Absolutely. And if your pages are shown in places like Discover, the preview image can play a big role in how attractive your page looks & how users click through to your content (also consider large image previews :-)). It’s not a ranking factor, but it can affect traffic.
